Overview
Snakely is a modern take on the classic Snake game, built as a single self-contained HTML file with no frameworks, libraries or build step. It aims to keep the familiar gameplay while adding a polished, glowing visual style.
How it works
The game uses a small modular architecture with a state system and entity objects for the snake, its tiles, the food and the board. The main loop runs on requestAnimationFrame for smooth 60 FPS rendering, while game logic advances on a separate tick counter that shortens each time food is eaten, so the snake speeds up progressively up to a set limit.
The board adapts to the viewport, switching between a 28×16 and 16×28 grid depending on orientation, which keeps it playable on both wide and tall screens. Directional indicators on tiles hint at the path to the food, the snake's head and the food pulse with animated glow effects, and the snake wraps around the edges of the board instead of dying on walls — only colliding with itself ends the game.
Players control the snake with the arrow keys or WASD, and the score updates in real time. Because everything lives in one file, the game can be hosted on any static host or simply opened locally in a browser.
